Purchase the jewel, the priceless treasure; the True Guru has given this understanding. The profit of profits is devotional worship of the Lord; one’s virtues merge into the virtues of the Lord. One’s virtues merge into the virtues of the Lord as one comes to understand one’s own self, earning the profit of devotional worship in this world. Without devotion, there is no peace; through duality, one’s honor is lost, but under Guru’s Instruction, one is blessed with the Support of the Naam. The profit of the merchandise of the Naam is earned forever, by those whom the Lord employs in this trade. They purchase the jewel, the invaluable treasure, when the True Guru gives this understanding. || 1 || Emotional attachment to Maya is totally painful; this is a bad bargain. Speaking falsehood, one eats poison; evil is greatly increasing. Evil is greatly increasing in this world of skepticism; without the Name, one’s honor is lost. Reading and studying, the religious scholars argue and debate; but without understanding, there is no peace. Their comings and goings never end; emotional attachment to Maya is dear to them. Emotional attachment to Maya is totally painful; this is a bad bargain. || 2 || The counterfeit and the genuine are all appraised in the Court of the True Lord. The counterfeit are cast out of the Court, and they stand there, crying in misery. They stand there, crying in misery — the foolish, idiotic, self-willed manmukhs have wasted their lives. Maya is the poison which has deluded the world; it does not love the Naam, the Name of the Lord. The self-willed manmukhs hate the Saints; they harvest only pain in this world. The counterfeit and the genuine are appraised in that True Court of the Lord. || 3 || He Himself acts; who else should I ask? No one else can do anything. As He pleases, He engages us; such is His glorious greatness. Such is His glorious greatness — Waheguru Ji Himself causes all to act; no one is a warrior or a coward. The Life of the world, the Great Giver, the Architect of karma — He Himself grants forgiveness. By Guru’s Grace, self-conceit is eradicated, O Nanak, and through the Naam, honor is obtained. He Himself acts; who else should I ask? No one else can do anything. || 4 || 4 ||

ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਵਣਜੀਅਹਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਬੁਝਾਈ ਰਾਮ ॥
रतन पदारथ वणजीअहि सतिगुरि दीआ बुझाई राम ॥
Raṯan paḏārath vaṇjī▫ah saṯgur ḏī▫ā bujẖā▫ī rām.
Purchase the jewel, the invaluable treasure; the True Guru has given this understanding.
ਲਾਹਾ ਲਾਭੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਾਈ ਰਾਮ ॥
लाहा लाभु हरि भगति है गुण महि गुणी समाई राम ॥
Lāhā lābẖ har bẖagaṯ hai guṇ mėh guṇī samā▫ī rām.
The profit of profits is the devotional worship of the Lord; one's virtues merge into the virtues of the Lord.
ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਾਏ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਲਾਹਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੈਸਾਰੇ ॥
गुण महि गुणी समाए जिसु आपि बुझाए लाहा भगति सैसारे ॥
Guṇ mėh guṇī samā▫e jis āp bujẖā▫e lāhā bẖagaṯ saisāre.
One's virtues merge into the virtues of the Lord; he comes to understand his own self. He earns the profit of devotional worship in this world.
ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੇ ॥
बिनु भगती सुखु न होई दूजै पति खोई गुरमति नामु अधारे ॥
Bin bẖagṯī sukẖ na ho▫ī ḏūjai paṯ kẖo▫ī gurmaṯ nām aḏẖāre.
Without devotion, there is no peace; through duality, one's honor is lost, but under Guru's Instruction, he is blessed with the Support of the Naam.
ਵਖਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਲਾਭੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਏਤੁ ਵਾਪਾਰਿ ਲਾਏ ॥
वखरु नामु सदा लाभु है जिस नो एतु वापारि लाए ॥
vakẖar nām saḏā lābẖ hai jis no eṯ vāpār lā▫e.
He ever earns the profit of the merchandise of the Naam, whom the Lord employs in this Trade.
ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਵਣਜੀਅਹਿ ਜਾਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦੇਇ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥੧॥
रतन पदारथ वणजीअहि जां सतिगुरु देइ बुझाए ॥१॥
Raṯan paḏārath vaṇjī▫ah jāʼn saṯgur ḏe▫e bujẖā▫e. ||1||
He purchases the jewel, the invaluable treasure, unto whom the True Guru has given this understanding. ||1||
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੈ ਖੋਟਾ ਇਹੁ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
माइआ मोहु सभु दुखु है खोटा इहु वापारा राम ॥
Mā▫i▫ā moh sabẖ ḏukẖ hai kẖotā ih vāpārā rām.
The love of Maya is totally painful; this is a bad deal.
ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਵਣੀ ਬਹੁ ਵਧਹਿ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
कूड़ु बोलि बिखु खावणी बहु वधहि विकारा राम ॥
Kūṛ bol bikẖ kẖāvṇī baho vaḏẖėh vikārā rām.
Speaking falsehood, one eats poison, and the evil within increases greatly.
ਬਹੁ ਵਧਹਿ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ਸਹਸਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥
बहु वधहि विकारा सहसा इहु संसारा बिनु नावै पति खोई ॥
Baho vaḏẖėh vikārā sahsā ih sansārā bin nāvai paṯ kẖo▫ī.
The evil within increases greatly, in this world of doubt; without the Name, one's honor is lost.
ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
पड़ि पड़ि पंडित वादु वखाणहि बिनु बूझे सुखु न होई ॥
Paṛ paṛ pandiṯ vāḏ vakāṇėh bin būjẖe sukẖ na ho▫ī.
Reading and studying, the religious scholars argue and debate; but without understanding, there is no peace.
ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਚੂਕੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥
आवण जाणा कदे न चूकै माइआ मोह पिआरा ॥
Āvaṇ jāṇā kaḏe na cẖūkai mā▫i▫ā moh pi▫ārā.
Their comings and goings never end; emotional attachment to Maya is dear to them.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੈ ਖੋਟਾ ਇਹੁ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
माइआ मोहु सभु दुखु है खोटा इहु वापारा ॥२॥

खोटे खरे सभि परखीअनि तितु सचे कै दरबारा राम ॥
Kẖote kẖare sabẖ parkẖī▫an ṯiṯ sacẖe kai ḏarbārā rām.
The counterfeit and the genuine are all assayed in the Court of the True Lord.
ਖੋਟੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਸੁਟੀਅਨਿ ਊਭੇ ਕਰਨਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
खोटे दरगह सुटीअनि ऊभे करनि पुकारा राम ॥
Kẖote ḏargėh sutī▫an ūbẖe karan pukārā rām.
The counterfeit are cast out of the Court, and they stand there, crying out in misery.
ਊਭੇ ਕਰਨਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ਮੁਗਧ ਗਵਾਰਾ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
ऊभे करनि पुकारा मुगध गवारा मनमुखि जनमु गवाइआ ॥
Ūbẖe karan pukārā mugaḏẖ gavārā manmukẖ janam gavā▫i▫ā.
They stand there, crying out in misery; the foolish, idiotic, self-willed manmukhs have wasted their lives.
ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਗਤੁ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
बिखिआ माइआ जिनि जगतु भुलाइआ साचा नामु न भाइआ ॥
Bikẖi▫ā mā▫i▫ā jin jagaṯ bẖulā▫i▫ā sācẖā nām na bẖā▫i▫ā.
Maya is the poison which has deluded the world; it does not love the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸੰਤਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਵੈਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਖਟੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
मनमुख संता नालि वैरु करि दुखु खटे संसारा ॥
Manmukẖ sanṯā nāl vair kar ḏukẖ kẖate sansārā.
The self-willed manmukhs are resentful toward the Saints; they harvest only pain in this world.
ਖੋਟੇ ਖਰੇ ਪਰਖੀਅਨਿ ਤਿਤੁ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਵਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥੩॥
खोटे खरे परखीअनि तितु सचै दरवारा राम ॥३॥
Kẖote kẖare parkẖī▫an ṯiṯ sacẖai ḏarvārā rām. ||3||
The counterfeit and the genuine are assayed in that True Court of the Lord. ||3||
ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਹੋਰੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਰਾਮ ॥
आपि करे किसु आखीऐ होरु करणा किछू न जाई राम ॥
Āp kare kis ākẖī▫ai hor karṇā kicẖẖū na jā▫ī rām.
He Himself acts; who else should I ask? No one else can do anything.
ਜਿਤੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਸੀ ਜਿਉ ਤਿਸ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਰਾਮ ॥
जितु भावै तितु लाइसी जिउ तिस दी वडिआई राम ॥
Jiṯ bẖāvai ṯiṯ lā▫isī ji▫o ṯis ḏī vadi▫ā▫ī rām.
As He pleases, He engages us; such is His glorious greatness.
ਜਿਉ ਤਿਸ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਈ ਵਰੀਆਮੁ ਨ ਫੁਸੀ ਕੋਈ ॥
जिउ तिस दी वडिआई आपि कराई वरीआमु न फुसी कोई ॥
Ji▫o ṯis ḏī vadi▫ā▫ī āp karā▫ī varī▫ām na fusī ko▫ī.
Such is His glorious greatness - He Himself causes all to act; no one is a warrior or a coward.
ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਕਰਮਿ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਸੋਈ ॥
जगजीवनु दाता करमि बिधाता आपे बखसे सोई ॥
Jagjīvan ḏāṯā karam biḏẖāṯā āpe bakẖse so▫ī.
The Life of the World, the Great Giver, the Architect of karma - He Himself grants forgiveness.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਈਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
गुर परसादी आपु गवाईऐ नानक नामि पति पाई ॥
Gur parsādī āp gavā▫ī▫ai Nānak nām paṯ pā▫ī.
By Guru's Grace, self-conceit is eradicated, O Nanak, and through the Naam, honor is obtained.
ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਹੋਰੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੪॥੪॥
आपि करे किसु आखीऐ होरु करणा किछू न जाई ॥४॥४॥
Āp kare kis ākẖī▫ai hor karṇā kicẖẖū na jā▫ī. ||4||4||
He Himself acts; who else should I ask? No one else can do anything. ||4||4||

ਹੇ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਅਮੋਲਕ ਵੱਖਰ ਨੂੰ ਖਰੀਦ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਐਸੀ ਸਮਝ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ = ਕੀਮਤੀ ਰਤਨ। ਵਣਜੀਅਹਿ = ਵਣਜੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਖ਼ਰੀਦੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ = ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ।
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ) ਕੀਮਤੀ ਰਤਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਪਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਸੂਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ।
ਲਾਹਾ ਲਾਭੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਾਈ ਰਾਮ ॥

ਮੁਨਾਫਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਮੁਨਾਫਾ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਮਈ ਭਗਤੀ ਹੈ। ਨੇਕ ਬੰਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀਆਂ ਨੇਕੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ = (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ) ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਿਚ (ਜੁੜ ਕੇ)। ਗੁਣੀ = ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ। ਸਮਾਈ = ਲੀਨਤਾ।
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਖੱਟੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਲੀਨਤਾ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਭਲਾ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਪਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਭਲਾਈ ਅੰਦਰ ਰਮਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਜੱਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹ ਸਾਈਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਨਫਾ ਕਮਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਮਾਏ = ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸੈਸਾਰੇ = ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ (ਆ ਕੇ)।
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ) ਸੂਝ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਭਗਤੀ ਦਾ ਲਾਭ ਖੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੇ ॥

ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਰਾਗ ਬਾਝੋਂ, ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਰਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ। ਹੋਰਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗੁਆ ਲੈਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੂਜੈ = ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ। ਅਧਾਰੇ = ਆਸਰਾ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ) ਆਸਰਾ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਸ਼ਚਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਵਖਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਲਾਭੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਏਤੁ ਵਾਪਾਰਿ ਲਾਏ ॥

ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰੂਭੂ ਇਸ ਵਣਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਦੀਵ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਸੌਦੇ ਸੂਤ ਦਾ ਨਫਾ ਉਠਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਏਤੁ = ਇਸ ਵਿਚ। ਵਾਪਾਰਿ = ਵਪਾਰ ਵਿਚ। ਏਤੁ ਵਾਪਾਰਿ = ਇਸ ਵਪਾਰ ਵਿਚ।
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ (ਨਾਮ-) ਵਪਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਸਮਾਨ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਸੌਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਲਾਭ ਖੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਜਦ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਿਖਮਤ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤਾਂ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਮਾਲ ਦੇ ਜਵੇਹਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਾਪਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ = ਕੀਮਤੀ ਰਤਨ। ਵਣਜੀਅਹਿ = ਵਣਜੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਖ਼ਰੀਦੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ = ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ॥੧॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ) ਸਮਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ) ਕੀਮਤੀ ਰਤਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਵਪਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੈ ਖੋਟਾ ਇਹੁ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
The love of Maya is totally painful; this is a bad deal.
ਧੰਨ-ਦੌਲਤ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਸਮੂਹ ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਹੀ ਹੈ। ਝੂਠਾ ਹੈ ਇਹ ਵਣਜ।
ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ = ਨਿਰਾ ਦੁੱਖ। ਖੋਟਾ = (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ) ਘਾਟਾ ਪਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ।
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਨਿਰਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ (ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ) ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਲਈ ਘਾਟਾ ਪਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਵਪਾਰ ਹੈ।
ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਵਣੀ ਬਹੁ ਵਧਹਿ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
Speaking falsehood, one eats poison, and the evil within increases greatly.
ਝੂਠ ਬੋਲ ਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਅੰਦਰ ਬਦੀਆਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਵੱਧ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਬੋਲਿ = ਬੋਲ ਕੇ। ਬਿਖੁ = (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਮੁਕਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ) ਜ਼ਹਿਰ। ਵਧਹਿ = ਵਧਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਝੂਠ ਬੋਲ ਬੋਲ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਵਾਲੀ) ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਜਿਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਵਧਦੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਬਹੁ ਵਧਹਿ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ਸਹਸਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥
The evil within increases greatly, in this world of doubt; without the Name, one's honor is lost.
ਇਸ ਸ਼ੱਕ ਦੇ ਸਤਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਜੱਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਪ ਘਣੇਰੇ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ। ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਆਦਮੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਵੰਞਾ ਲੈਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਹਸਾ = ਸਹਿਮ। ਪਤਿ = ਇੱਜ਼ਤ।
ਇੰਜ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਵਧਦੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਸਹਿਮ (ਦਾ ਘਰ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ) ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ; ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
Reading and studying, the religious scholars argue and debate; but without understanding, there is no peace.
ਬਹੁਤ ਲਿਖ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ, ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਬਹਿਸ ਮੁਬਾਹਿਸੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਬਗੈਰ ਗਿਆਤ ਦੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਰਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਵਾਦੁ = ਝਗੜਾ, ਬਹਿਸ। ਵਖਾਣਹਿ = ਉਚਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਵੇਦ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਪੰਡਤ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਨੁਕਤਾਚੀਨੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੁਟਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਚੂਕੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥
Their comings and goings never end; emotional attachment to Maya is dear to them.
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਧੰਨ-ਦੌਲਤ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਉਣੇ ਤੇ ਜਾਣੇ ਕਦਾਚਿੱਤ ਮੁਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਨ ਚੂਕੈ = ਨਹੀਂ ਮੁੱਕਦਾ।
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੁੱਕਦਾ।
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੈ ਖੋਟਾ ਇਹੁ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
The love of Maya is totally painful; this is a bad deal. ||2||
ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਲਗਨ ਸਮੂਹ ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਹੀ ਹੈ। ਮੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਇਹ ਸੁਦਾਗਰੀ।
ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ = ਨਿਰਾ ਦੁੱਖ। ਖੋਟਾ = (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ) ਘਾਟਾ ਪਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ॥੨॥
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਨਿਰਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ (ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ) ਹੈ, ਤੇ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਲਈ) ਘਾਟਾ ਪਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਵਪਾਰ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਖੋਟੇ ਖਰੇ ਸਭਿ ਪਰਖੀਅਨਿ ਤਿਤੁ ਸਚੇ ਕੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
The counterfeit and the genuine are all assayed in the Court of the True Lord.
ਜਾਲ੍ਹੀ ਅਤੇ ਅਸਲੀ, ਉਸ ਸੱਚੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਅੰਦਰ, ਸਾਰੇ ਜਾਂਚੇ-ਪੜਤਾਲੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਭਿ = ਸਾਰੇ। ਪਰਖੀਅਨਿ = ਪਰਖੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਤਿਤੁ = ਉਸ ਵਿਚ। ਤਿਤੁ ਦਰਬਾਰਾ = ਤਿਤੁ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ, ਉਸ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਵਿਚ।
ਭੈੜੇ ਅਤੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਸਾਰੇ (ਜੀਵ) ਉਸ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਖੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਖੋਟੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਸੁਟੀਅਨਿ ਊਭੇ ਕਰਨਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
The counterfeit are cast out of the Court, and they stand there, crying out in misery.
ਕੂੜੇ ਕਚਹਿਰੀਓ ਬਾਹਰ ਸੁੱਟ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਖੜੇ ਹੋ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਉਹ ਵਿਰਲਾਪ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸੁਟੀਅਨਿ = ਪਰੇ ਸੁੱਟੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਰੱਦ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਊਭੇ = ਖਲੋਤੇ।
ਭੈੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਤਾਂ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਦੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਉਥੇ ਖਲੋ ਕੇ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਊਭੇ ਕਰਨਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ਮੁਗਧ ਗਵਾਰਾ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
They stand there, crying out in misery; the foolish, idiotic, self-willed manmukhs have wasted their lives.
ਮੂਰਖ ਤੇ ਬੁੱਧੂ ਖੜੇ ਹੋ ਵਿਰਲਾਪ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਅਧਰਮੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਤਬਾਹ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਕਰਨਿ = ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਮੁਗਧ = ਮੂਰਖ। ਮਨਮੁਖਿ = ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ।
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਗਵਾ ਲਿਆ, ਉਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਗਵਾਰ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਤੇ) ਖਲੋਤੇ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਹਾੜੇ-ਤਰਲੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਗਤੁ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
Maya is the poison which has deluded the world; it does not love the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਮੋਹਨੀ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਨੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਮਰਾਹ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ।
ਬਿਖਿਆ = ਜ਼ਹਿਰ। ਜਿਨਿ = ਜਿਸ (ਮਾਇਆ) ਨੇ। ਭੁਲਾਇਆ = ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਸਾਚਾ = ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ। ਭਾਇਆ = ਪਸੰਦ ਆਇਆ।
ਜਿਸ ਮਾਇਆ-ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਨੇ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਚੰਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਲੱਗਾ।
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸੰਤਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਵੈਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਖਟੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
The self-willed manmukhs are resentful toward the Saints; they harvest only pain in this world.
ਸਾਧੂਆਂ, ਨਾਲ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਨੀ ਕਰਕੇ, ਅਧਰਮੀ ਜਗਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਤਕਲੀਫ ਉਠਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਰਿ = ਕਰ ਕੇ।
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਗਤ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਵੈਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਵਿਹਾਝਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਖੋਟੇ ਖਰੇ ਪਰਖੀਅਨਿ ਤਿਤੁ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਵਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥੩॥
The counterfeit and the genuine are assayed in that True Court of the Lord. ||3||
ਕੂੜਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਚਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਉਸ ਸੱਚੀ ਕਚਹਿਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਿਰਣਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤਿਤੁ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਵਾਰਾ = ਉਸ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਵਿਚ ॥੩॥
ਭੈੜੇ ਅਤੇ ਚੰਗੇ (ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ) ਉਸ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਖੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਹੋਰੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਰਾਮ ॥
He Himself acts; who else should I ask? No one else can do anything.
ਸਾਹਿਬ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁਛ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮੈਂ ਹੋਰ ਕੀਹਨੂੰ ਕਹਾਂ? ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਹੋਰੁ = (ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਉਲਟ ਕੋਈ) ਹੋਰ (ਕੰਮ)।
(ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ 'ਖੋਟੇ ਖਰੇ') ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਸੇ ਤੇ ਕੀ ਗਿਲਾ ਕਰੀਏ, ਹੋਰ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਜਿਤੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਸੀ ਜਿਉ ਤਿਸ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਰਾਮ ॥
As He pleases, He engages us; such is His glorious greatness.
ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕੀਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਤੁ = ਜਿਸ (ਕੰਮ) ਵਿਚ। ਤਿਤੁ = ਉਸ (ਕੰਮ) ਵਿਚ। ਤਿਸ ਦੀ = {ਲਫ਼ਜ਼ 'ਤਿਸੁ ਦਾ ੁ ਸੰਬੰਧਕ 'ਦੀ' ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉੱਡ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ}।
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਠੀਕ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਰਾਹੇ ਪਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਤਿਵੇਂ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਜਿਉ ਤਿਸ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਈ ਵਰੀਆਮੁ ਨ ਫੁਸੀ ਕੋਈ ॥
Such is His glorious greatness - He Himself causes all to act; no one is a warrior or a coward.
ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੈ, ਉਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਖੁਦ ਵਡਿਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਕੋਈ ਸੂਰਮਾ ਜਾ ਕਾਇਰ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਵਰੀਆਮੁ = ਸੂਰਮਾ। ਫੁਸੀ = ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ।
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਿਵੇਂ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਕੰਮ) ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਵਿਚ) ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ ਸੂਰਮਾ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਹੈ।
ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਕਰਮਿ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਸੋਈ ॥
The Life of the World, the Great Giver, the Architect of karma - He Himself grants forgiveness.
ਦਾਤਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜਗਤ ਦੀ ਜਿੰਦ-ਜਾਨ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਲਬਧ ਬਨਾਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਖਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਰਮਿ = (ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ) ਕਰਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ। ਬਿਧਾਤਾ = ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ।
ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਜੋ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਈਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
By Guru's Grace, self-conceit is eradicated, O Nanak, and through the Naam, honor is obtained.
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਵੈ-ਹੰਗਤਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਪਰਸਾਦੀ = ਪਰਸਾਦਿ, ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ। ਆਪੁ = ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ {ਲਫ਼ਜ਼ 'ਆਪਿ' ਅਤੇ 'ਆਪੁ' ਦਾ ਫ਼ਰਕ ਚੇਤੇ ਰੱਖੋ}। ਨਾਮਿ = ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ (ਜੁੜ ਕੇ)। ਪਤਿ = ਇੱਜ਼ਤ।
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਹੋਰੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੪॥੪॥
He Himself acts; who else should I ask? No one else can do anything. ||4||4||
ਸਾਈਂ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਕੁਛ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮੈਂ ਹੋਰ ਕੀਹਦੇ ਮੂਹਰੇ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਾਂ? ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਹੋਰੁ = (ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਉਲਟ ਕੋਈ) ਹੋਰ (ਕੰਮ) ॥੪॥੪॥
(ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ 'ਖੋਟੇ ਖਰੇ') ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਸੇ ਤੇ ਕੀ ਗਿਲਾ ਕਰੀਏ, ਹੋਰ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੪॥੪॥
